Ability grouping is undoubtedly a divisive topic. There are thousands of teachers in hundreds of schools throughout the UK and Ireland who are steadfast in their belief that grouping by 'perceived' ability has a positive impact on academic performance. However, there are many others who believe that grouping children in this way could in fact damage them for life. In this module teachers will be presented with the most recent empirical and theoretical evidence on the topic, enabling them to make reflective, informed decisions about what might work within their specific context.
